AI Natives #17 - big moves in politics of AI from UK and US
Biden's AI Order, Global AI Declaration, Legal Battles, and AlphaFold's Evolution
Hey there, #TheAINatives! 🤖
Happy to have you here joining us with the seventeenth issue of The AI Natives.
This week presented noteworthy developments in guiding AI's continued evolution toward responsible and ethical innovation.
The big news are in the world of politics and regulation. President Biden's executive order outlines comprehensive goals for AI safety standards across privacy, equity, security, and more. While balancing innovation and regulation is complex, setting guidelines to mitigate risks is a prudent move. Likewise, the unprecedented Bletchley Declaration from 28 nations signals acknowledging AI's profound challenges happen during inauguration of AI Summit in UK. Everyone seems to agree that collaboration in research and governance is imperative.
On the industry side, tools like LinkedIn's AI job assistant and Stability AI's image enhancements highlight the pace of commercial progress. But as AI proliferates, so do potential downsides. Safeguarding data privacy remains paramount, as does monitoring impacts to traditional roles.
Exciting hardware advances are emerging too, like Microsoft's open-sourced multimodal model. Compact, efficient AI could help democratize access. However, risks persist around AI-enabled threats like enhanced phishing campaigns.
The legal domain is also producing first outcomes. Artists are challenged in their AI art dispute over copyright issues.
And AlphaFold's evolution continues unlocking new frontiers in biology, exemplifying AI's immense scientific potential.
Let’s see in details how the week went and early glimpses of what we can expect in the future.
A note on 🚩, 💚or 🟠 being next to the news title in the sections below. This is expression of my take, whether I see the news as positive or dangerous. We will delve deeper into dangers of AI going onward, as there is not enough being discussed in that space.

Biden's Executive Order on AI Safety Guidelines: A Step Toward Responsible AI Development 💚
President Joe Biden has issued an executive order aimed at establishing standards and guidelines for AI safety. The order outlines a comprehensive set of goals, including safeguarding privacy, promoting equity, advancing AI innovation, and ensuring responsible government use of the technology. It assigns various government agencies the task of creating standards to mitigate AI's potential risks, particularly in the realm of infrastructure and cybersecurity.
My take: Biden's executive order is an important step in the direction of responsible AI development. While it comes after EU AI Act, take a look at Walter Pasquarelli breakdown of core differences between the two.
UK AI Summit: Global Powers Acknowledge the "Catastrophic" Potential of AI 💚
In an unprecedented declaration, 28 nations, including the UK, US, EU, Australia, and China, recognize the profound risks posed by AI during the Bletchley summit. They pledge to collaborate on AI safety research, emphasizing the need for a collective effort in navigating AI development and potential regulations.
My take: After weeks of cooling down the doom scenarios by leading AI experts, the Bletchley declaration marks a big step in acknowledging global AI challenges and calls for international cooperation in AI safety research to harness its benefits and mitigate risks. One could ask if the language used in the declaration is not a reflection of fear of unknown, rather than an actual theory of impact we could see from AI.
LinkedIn Surpasses 1 Billion Members and Unleashes AI Job Assistant 💚
LinkedIn is making a strategic push to revitalize its revenue growth trajectory after eight consecutive quarters of stagnation. Just a fortnight ago, the company announced a significant reduction in its workforce, focusing largely on its engineering department. LinkedIn’s latest AI-powered chatbot, designed for job-seekers, is designed to be triggered from a job posting, providing answers to critical queries like “Am I a suitable fit for this role?” and “How can I position myself optimally for this job?” The chatbot scans the user’s LinkedIn profile and offers customized advice, even highlighting potential gaps in the user’s qualifications that might hinder their job application.
My take: While LinkedIn's AI job assistant is undoubtedly a step in the right direction, what makes it even more right is the current economic conditions observable in many western countries. Having an AI tool will allow you to make a more target choices whether a job is right for you or not. But, the side consequence of that is that you will have more competition for position you may be crazy about.
French AI Startup Mistral Gears Up for a Massive $300 Million Funding Round 🚩
Reports are swirling about Mistral, a burgeoning French AI startup that appears to be on the cusp of securing an impressive $300 million investment, potentially elevating its valuation to over $1 billion. Among the key investors purportedly involved in this funding round are the prominent venture capital firms Andreessen Horowitz and General Catalyst.
My take: Source of this news called Mistral a ‘wannabie OpenAI of Europe’ and I find it very fitting. It is amazing to see that one correctly done 7B LLM model can be a proof point big enough to go for such a big cash. At the same time, they did a very, very, very good model, so perhaps - they deserve it?
Stability AI Unveils Cutting-Edge Image Enhancements and 3D Capabilities 🟠
Stability AI, a leading name in the realm of generative artificial intelligence, is all set to dazzle with its latest text-to-image products. Among its innovations is "Sky Replacer," a fascinating tool allowing users to transform the skies in their photos with a selection of nine alternatives, catering especially to industries like real estate. Additionally, they're introducing "Stable 3D," a tool that offers the magic of creating 3D objects with remarkable ease and speed, potentially revolutionizing the workflows of graphic designers and game developers.
My take: The introduction of tools like "Sky Replacer" and Stable 3D underscores the rapid evolution of AI-driven creative tools. This is big because 3D object generation is a massive space in gaming industry. And if you are looking for a nice example how big this industry is, have a look on a revenue breakdown of Microsoft, comparing Xbox with LinkedIn (used by 1bln users!).
